Sunrise and Sunset

Sunrise and Sunset photographs are taken in the ‘magic hour’, i.e. 30 minutes before and after sunrise or sunset when the light is at its softest. As the sun transits the horizon, light has to travel through the thickest part of the earth’s atmosphere. This softens and diffuses the light, illuminating the landscape indirectly compared to the hard light of midday when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. Hard light travels though the thinnest part of the atmosphere and is therefore less diffused and more intense, creating sharp edged shadows. Both Sunrise and Sunset generate some of the most spectacular landscape images, often with pastel colours and vivid cloud illuminations in the sky due to increased levels of atmospheric refraction diffusing light intensity.
